I love fresh homemade food.  For many years, I have purchased this Pita Bread because I didn’t know how to make pita and didn’t have much time to make. But now I know making this at own kitchen is far better rather than buying it! Although nowadays, sometimes I make pita bread in oven with yeast, I still find this quick pita recipe is a lot easier and healthier preference to make bread without yeast.

Also, Pita dough is simple to make and because its edges are thin, they cook easily in less than 5 minutes. But if you don’t have time to make your own, this store-bought pita can be warmed, wrapped in foil and can be stored in the freeze for later use.

Well then – yes pitas sustain molds but only if you don’t freeze them properly. If you want to freeze original store-bought packaging, you can simply wrap the package in aluminum foil and keep it into the freezer. This aluminum foil will provide extra protection from freezer burn.

First, store homemade Pitas in the high-quality zip-seal plastic bags. But, before you put them there, make sure to squeeze out the extra air until the plastic clings to the stack of pita bread. Then cover it with the aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that Pita Bread can stay in the refrigerator for a few months, the longer it is frozen, the dryer it will become.

  • 2/3 cup Warm water
  • 2 cups Organic White Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt - or as you taste
  • 1/4 cup Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Pinch of dried herbs - rosemary, basil, oregano, etc. - optional


  1. In a large bowl mix warm water and salt to dissolve the salt.

  2. Add Extra-virgin olive oil, organic whole wheat flour and dried herbs (optional) in it and mix everything well with your hands until the moisture is distributed.

  3. Knead it with hands for 3-4 minutes until you get a nice, soft round ball of dough. Add extra whole wheat flour on your working surface if need to get a good moisture.

  4. Wrap it with a soft cotton cloth or cling wrap and rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  5. After that cut it into 6 small pieces and roll each of the pieces out into 1/4 inch thickness (note: these won't rise much, so make them as thick as you'd like them to be in the end.).

  6. Heat in a pan over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side. If you use a non-stick pan, you don't need to brush any oil. You shouldn’t have any trouble flipping them.

  7. Place the rolled pita into the hot pan. Once it’s baked on one side – you’ll notice tiny bubbles forming to the surface. Flip it over and let it bake on the other side. Repeat these steps until you finish up with all pita dough.

  8. Once pitas are ready, you can serve warm with sandwiches, pizzas ingredients folded in half or use the pocket.

Make it crispy:
  1. If you want to enjoy crispy pita, simply don’t cover it. keep it at room temperature and let it cool.

Make it soft:
  1. Usually, this pita will be soft when it's hot. But if you want to keep them soft for a couple of hours, cover them with a thick towel or airtight container right after it’s baked; the steam will soften them and they will be flexible.
